'80s themed Birthday Bash (with pics! - one of them quite shameful)

(Ok, so this post is waaaayyyy behind. Three months almost to the day. At any rate, I'm behind in most things these days, so here's a little catch up.)

I turned the ripe ol' age of 40 last week. (keeping in mind that "last week" is last week, 3 months ago)

My wife threw me an '80s party cuz...well...cuz she flat out rocks!

So here are a few pics. I'm only posting a couple shots, mainly to protect the innocent (the rest of the crew may not want their mugs pasted here). Maybe more pics will follow in a future (past) post. I can't believe I'm posting a shot of me in full '80s gear, but hey, if I'm gonna "reveal" myself, it may as well be disguised in:

* a mullet wig
* a Member's Only jacket
* an Atari t-shirt
* a skinny tie
* a pair of Vans (sorta)
* some smooth shades
* rubber gel bracelets

and...wait for it....

* zebra-striped spandex

Ah well, all shame aside, here ya go:

"Oh the humanity!"

Here's a shot of the "Table o'Eighties" which was a very popular stop for the partygoers:

And here's one of my gifts (didn't even know they still made that crap):

There are many other better pics, but they are on my sis-in-law's camera, and I'm not sure when I'll get a digi copy of those, so for now, these will have to do.

Anyway, I hope I brought a smile to your face today with these...or at least sparked a memory or two. I had a perma-grin on all night during the bash, and felt like I was 15 again (God knows I sure acted like it...ha!)

Oh yeah, my fave part was watching everyone's faces trying to figure out how I had MTV from 1983 (yeah, not quite Back in '81 but the best I could do) on my TV all night. I found some sweet files on teh internets that had about 4 hours or so of actual MTV footage from 1983, commercials and all. This video footage is now pretty much all over the interwebz, so you can find it pretty easily. If you haven't watched it yet, it's well worth a viewing...and a "right-click, save-as". Mark Goodman was the VJ during that timeslot, and it was freakin awesome to have as the backdrop and soundtrack for my 40th b-day bash.

So...there ya go.

OK, I see Boss Hogg from Dukes of Hazzard in that cartoon shot, but the lack of J.R. Ewing is just inexcusable!

I recently discovered two old VHS tapes of mine containing around 10 hours total of MTV videos I recorded around 1986. I gotta keep those in decent shape for my eventualy 80's bash!

OH, and I still have a members only jacket. They are coming back in style, ya know!

@ Brunomac: Boss Hog..ha! Where's "Cooter?" That name always cracked me up.

Very cool that you still have some old MTV on VHS...but no betamax? ;>]

The oldest MTV I think I personally still have is Whitesnake-Tawny-Kitaen-crawling-on-the-hood-of-a-Jag stuff, which is still very good.

My buddy's Dad has tons of old MTV and SNL (the musical guests, especially)...mostly on beta...ha!

On the Member's Only tip, I snagged that sky-blue one from ebay for $10. It coat me more to freakin' dry-clean the darn thing...jeesh!

Besides the jacket and the spandex (a last minute buy thanx to my sis-in-law - like 15 minutes before the party started), the rest is actually stuff I already had...yikes!

Definitely have that party though, bud. You will have a blast.

Oh yeah, the table-o-80s stuff is all mine, and mostly all vintage (a couple re-releases there, but mostly all the real deal)...fun!

The weekend after New Year's, I finally kicked my Tab addiction. I never stopped drinking it, and for stretches I drank about a 12-pack a day. Gets expensive.

LOL! I give you credit for posting that pic of yourself. I spent so long trying to lose or destroy any pictures of myself from that era that I don't think I'd be able to allow a pic like that to ever see the light of day! :P

BTW: Something major was missing from your 80's table: Where's the D&D books??? For shame! ;)

@ Scott: Wow...just wow! Well, if you ever go back on the kick, I still have some left over....3 months later. ;>]

@ Christopher B:

You are (almost) correct on the D&D tip. Under one of the handhelds, the pile of PopRocks and Zotz, or possibly just still plugged into the cartridge slot on the intellivision is..."Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" (intellivision cart). So D&D was rep'd in a very small way that night.

Sadly, no one else at the party would have (a) gotten the D&D thing, if I had the books/minis out, or (b) wanted to sit down at the kitchen table and play some "Keep on the Borderlands" or such fun with me. So, I left them in the den stacked on my desk, and in storage (for the ones that I have yet to dig out since our move).

But, you are still right. I should have rep'd D&D much better. There's always my wife's 40th b-day party. Maybe I can convert some of our friends before then, and then we can play a session. Otherwise I'm gonna have to invite all of ya'll to the party...ha!

Happy 40th man! What an awesome idea for a theme party. For you though, I couldn't imagine it any other way. ;-)

Remember Martha Stewart? Ha!

@ Gamer Dude:
Martha Stewart?!?!? I hope you mean Martha Quinn.

OMG, I read your comment and at first I was like "huh?"...then I was like "LOLZ!"

Actually, maybe you were pairing Martha Stewart with my sweet hairdo in that pic. I could see that...hehe.
